Scam: Trouva “Investment” Collapses

Trouva, a fraudulent scheme that duped many South Africans into investing large sums of money with promises of unrealistic gains, has finally collapsed.

On Thursday, 3 October 2024, numerous so-called investors in the ill-fated scam reported that Trouva was not allowing withdrawals. Instead, the platform demanded further deposits under the guise of “identity verification.”

WhatsApp messages from individuals behind the Trouva scam claimed that, as part of so-called compliance requirements and efforts to “flush out false accounts,” users were required to deposit R2,650 to verify their identities.

These “identity verification” fees varied, with some victims receiving messages quoting amounts like R2,730, R2,280, R3,050, and other random figures.

The messages were sent from UK-based phone numbers, adding a further layer of deception.

In the aftermath, many users, realising they had been scammed, began encouraging each other to report the incident to authorities and their banks.

One user posted on Facebook, “The Hawks need to know about this,” while another, disheartened, wrote, “It’s clear we’ve been scammed, simple as that. Let’s move on and forget it. It is what it is.”

Interest in the Trouva scam, not to be confused with the UK-based online marketplace for independent boutiques also called Trouva, began in April 2024.

According to Google Trends data, it peaked in May 2024, slowed down, then surged again in July 2024, reaching fever pitch last month.

The scam exploited the name and goodwill of the legitimate Trouva marketplace, positioning itself as the same UK-based company.

In one promotional video, a man named John—likely a commissioned voice actor hired via platforms like Fiverr or Upwork—was seen standing in front of a fake Trouva logo, flanked by UK and South African flags.

Trouva, the legitimate company, has no known presence in South Africa and primarily serves UK and European customers.

The Trouva scam is just one in a long list of fraudulent schemes targeting South Africans in 2024.

Many people, often driven by desperation, have fallen victim to these unregistered and unregulated scams and pyramid schemes.

    Hi.

I am also a victim of this along with my family and work colleagues 😓😥😢

In total we all put in estimated R200 000.

We was led by Neville Pillay our very close family member whom we trusted.

  22. Perri says:

I wish there were a way we could all retrieve our money. We trusted the close people who introduced us to this trouva yor i am also a victim and the people showed how they withdraw the money so we all believed its legit. Amd suddenly yesterday this happened. I am so ful of regret. But yah we make mistakes and we learn

  23. Perri says:

On the trouva app the money shows in the trouva account but then of you withdraw they ask for a fund password do any of you know the fund password?

    • Stacey says:

Ur log in password. But still u unable to draw out.
Shows processing but it will remain as that!

      😢😥😨😰😭

      • Perri says:

That is also a scheme so that we eventually lost our money, that why they asking for a fund password now. Eish

    • Frank says:

You have to set it up yourselve. But its useless.. There can show R1mil in your account.. It’s all just numbers on their system. They have shut down everything and soon the servers running everything will also be down. Site is hosted on hostinger and contact details is protected by privacyprotect.org.

  24. Rishi says:

The admins listed as per my knowledge were:
Leon Chetty and Marciella Chètty most likely South Coast or Kokstad Area

    Naseema Ebrahiem from Jhb

Neville Munsami and Sandesh from Havenside Chatsworth.

There is a picture of an admins team meeting held most likely at Mugg and Bean Suncoast that was posted in the group.

These people can lead us to the MasterMinds or in fact they are the real MasterMinds!

    • Leon says:

Just to clarify what rishi is saying :
there were 59 administrators on the group.
So why only mentioned 5 people.
If you remember zoe added admins and given them certificates because of team size of 5 and above. We never asked to be administrators.
We never scammed people, it was not our Bank accounts that money was deposited into.
We introduced people to trouva the same way we were introduced, the same way you were introduced. Remember we were told to do charity events, seminars and offline parties. To promote the company.
All these were done under instructions from zoe(proof is available) and we were never reimbursed. So the loss is ours to bear. Every member mentioned joined using someone’s link. So stop calling us scammers. If I knew it was a scam I would have never joined. Get SAPS to investigate before you start accusing innocent people. Cause yourll accusation are disrupting innocent peoples lives. We also lost alot of money and we pray and hope we can recover some of it.

  25. Aneme Mbatha says:

I am also a victim I was told to pay 2290 yesterday to verify my account that it’s not fake I did not pay that money but I did recharge with 1.3 1300 hoping that I will check out the foundation money

  26. Perri says:

I believe they are the master minds. Wow how can people be so cruel there are people who invested millions and i am so sorry for them because its alot of money they really played with us all. And i am certain that those names they used are fake names even the profile pictures of the admins in that groups are fake profile pics they planned this scam properly so that there are no tracks leading back to them. But what they sow they will also reap. Lets learn out of our mistakes.

  27. Zaza says:

Yesterday they asked me to recharge 5000 to unlock trouva money, i recharged it, the evil cindy asked me to put an other 2280 because the first 5000 was not verified. I recharged it but up to now nothing came. I gave up, God is our own provider.what goes around comes around.

    • Jack says:

I sow the WhatsApp picture is also fake.but God will be with them

  28. Kin says:

Our banks are asking some documents in order to open an account and the deposits were made through their accounts, why not start by there?

    • Khai says:

Yes i also thought about the money was deposited into a capitec business account yor cant the bank somehow help. Some who deposited alot of money dont have money now these evil people will somehow pay. Ai i am so depressed 😔

  29. Jenny Sing says:

We must not leave this , everyone post needs to as many site internationally , this is to stop Trouva scammers from get more poor people. There is a team of members that has been in contact will authorities to investigate this matter. The banks and fraud units have been very helpful and they will get caught

  30. Dgajs says:

Sorry to all who lost funds. PLEASE STOP parties in get rich quick schemes regardless of who recommended it. Remember they all work the same, at first people are able to withdraw small amounts and that is used to attract more people to invest larger amounts and that’s when they shut it down and dissappear. So please don’t let numbers on the screen or proof of withdrawals convince you ever again, its nothing new its the convincing part of their modus operandi. Please protect the little money you have. May you all learn but also recover from this.

  31. Rachel says:

I already loss my last money as from now I don’t no nothing

  32. Shamima says:

Me to was scammed in this trouva i put alot in it

  33. Edward says:

They have changed the name to onBuy, it’s modus operandi is the same as Trouva… We lost alot of money and the app itself is stagnated.
