Using the GBWhatsApp mod can have many benefits, but it can also get you banned from the WhatsApp platform.
GBWhatsApp is a popular mod that allows users to take advantage of features not available on the regular WhatsApp. But Meta is cracking down on this unofficial variant and has even started banning GBWhatsApp users.
Why using GBWhatsApp could get you banned
Unofficial modifications, modified variants and extensions of beloved apps, games and other online platforms are pretty much as old as the internet itself.
The unofficial GBWhatsApp mod has been enjoying the attention of thousands of users in Nairobi, Kenya and South Africa for years now.
Like with most mods, installing and using the GBWhatsApp mod allows users to complete a number of actions which are impossible with the regular version of this chat app – including managing multiple accounts, sending larger files, enabling additional privacy features, and more.
However, Meta (the owner of WhatsApp) has recently cracked down on accounts using such mods. And several users across the globe have already received warnings that their accounts will be banned if they continue to use these mods moving forward.
Why Meta is banning WhatsApp mods
The reality is that while mods like GBWhatsApp add a few – often much-needed and widely appreciated – features to WhatsApp, the mods and their creators have nothing to do with the official WhatsApp app.
This means that Meta cannot vouch for the safety, privacy of efficacy of such a mod. The features offered by mods like GBWhatsApp also often violate the original app’s usage guidelines, terms and conditions.
Therefore, companies like Meta usually invest a lot of extra time and effort in discouraging users from using these mods.
The problem with GBWhatsApp and other WhatsApp mods
In essence, users GBWhatsApp users who have not yet received a warning that their account may be banned for using the mod, can continue to use the mod as usual until such a warning appears.
But while there are certainly many benefits associated with using such a mod, it also has its fair share of risks.
In fact, thousands of users scrambled to move from GBWhatsApp back to the regular WhatsApp in February of 2024 when news broke that this mod was reportedly responsible for a major data leak.
Other actions that can get you banned on WhatsApp
While you may still be debating whether or not to take the chance and use the GBWhatsApp mod, it might be a good time to recap all of the other actions that could possibly get you banned from using WhatsApp.
Some of the most common ban-able actions are:
- Violating the WhatsApp terms of service
- Scraping
- Using any kind of unauthorized application or an unsupported device
