NSFAS 2025 Funding: Strict eligibility criteria you can’t ignore

To qualify for NSFAS funding in 2025, there’s no room for misunderstandings.

First off, you must be a South African citizen or permanent resident, with a combined household income that doesn’t exceed R350,000 per year.

For students with disabilities, the limit is R600,000. If you’re on SASSA, you’re automatically eligible. No excuses here.

Academic progression? You’re expected to pass at least 60% of your courses. NSFAS isn’t throwing money at failures. You’ll be funded for the minimum duration of your course, plus one year, as per the N+ rule.

Living and Accommodation Allowances

In 2025, NSFAS will provide R16,500 per annum for university students and R10,000 per annum for TVET students.

Don’t be confused: these are annual totals, broken into monthly installments.

Annual accommodation caps sit at R50,000 for self-catering and R66,500 for university-managed accommodation in metros. They’re capping things because this funding is for studying, not luxury.

Key Dates and Application Process

Applications run from September 20, 2024, to December 15, 2024. Apply early and avoid delays. The process is online via the myNSFAS portal, and make sure your documents are in order—no room for mistakes.

NSFAS is a strict gatekeeper when it comes to funding; if you don’t meet the criteria, they won’t be lenient.

NSFAS isn’t a charity, it’s an investment in education. If you don’t meet the academic and financial criteria, don’t expect a lifeline.
