Gauteng Treasury allegedly loses R6 million of taxpayers’ money

The Gauteng DA has raised concerns about the alleged negligence of Gauteng Treasury, particularly for a reported error in the transfer of funds to Microsoft, resulting in a loss of over R6 million.

On Tuesday, 6 July 2021, the Democratic Alliance (DA) of Gauteng issued a press statement by the DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Finance and e-Government, Adriana Randall addressing the issue of the Gauteng Department of Treasury reportedly losing over R6 million of taxpayers money. The DA further stated that it believes that the R6 million that was lost could have afforded the country 48 000 Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccines, and would have protected many lives from COVID-19.

The Shadow MEC of Finance for the province has cited negligence as the cause of the mistake made by the Gauteng Department of Treasury. The department is reported to have made a significant error by processing an amount of $20 913 793.81, instead of the Rand value of the same figures, as per e-Government’s advise, for the cost of Microsoft fees. This error is said to have resulted in a debit amount of R318 307 941.79 million from the e-Government bank account.

The DA also expressed that it believes that the lost millions could have bought the country over 48 000 J & J vaccines which were last priced at $10 (R142.44) per dose, according to the Health Minister in April. The DA believes stronger action should be taken and that officials should be charged.
