Why you should choose philosophy as an elective (no matter your major)

I can’t think of a single career that wouldn’t benefit from having some philosophical innovation thrown its way, which is why I would advise people to take philosophy as an elective, irrespective of one’s major.

Beyond a few existential crises here and here, philosophy will teach you one very major and well-rewarded skill: the ability to think.

You probably find this strange. Of course, you can think! But the truth is that our schooling system doesn’t really encourage independence of thought, innovative, deep, or divergent thinking – at least not on a massive scale.

Now, whether your degree is in humanities or not, this skill can make you stand out among your peers. Lawyers, politicians, doctors, entrepreneurs, scientists, marketers, and engineers all find themselves in situations that are in need of creative solutions and ideas. Philosophy can assist you in thinking out of the box, creating a greater impression and impact on prospective employers.

When it comes to being a lawyer or politician, your ability to argue needs to be golden. Two years in a philosophy lecture hall and you will be able to argue yourself out of any situation – guaranteed.

There are, of course, two hurdles you need to take note of: do not underestimate this discipline and don’t be surprised if you find yourself wanting to become a full-time philosophy academic.

I spent many a time in my undergraduate years watching engineering students, mostly, fail philosophy 101, this after declaring that they are simply here because it’s an ‘easy’ elective. The humanities have an unfounded reputation for being undemanding, and while admittedly, in some rare cases, some of the workload may be less, the demand on your mind will remain great.

Secondly, prepare for a heavy conversion experience. I know it may not seem like it now, but there are so many individuals who change their major to philosophy, and you could very well be one of them.

“Philosophy is the highest music.” – Plato

Either way, this subject will not only assist you in your career, but will ultimately lead you to having a fuller and deeper experience of life.
