The tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, Gigi Bryant, and the other victims of the fatal helicopter crash sent shock waves worldwide, impacting more than just basketball fans.
Having not been a basketball fan, the name, Kobe Bryant, was still very much on my radar. He was always the reference point when people spoke about good sportsmanship or if you were excellent at a sport. He also made numerous cameos in popular sitcoms, including Modern Family, always playing himself, because he was that iconic.
When the news of his death broke on Sunday, 26 January 2020, I was completely stunned. Hearing that his daughter, Gigi, as well as seven others also died, made it so much more heart-wrenching. On Monday, 24 February 2020, the Bryant family, along with the Laker’s team, celebrated the lives lost with a public memorial service at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles – home of the Laker’s.
His wife, Vanessa Bryant, gave a touching speech which spoke about his dedication to his family and his pride in his daughters. Being one of the world’s greatest basketball players, Kobe was often asked if he wished he had a son to pass down his legacy. In all interviews, he was quick to respond with the fact that having four daughters made no difference, because he was certain that Gigi would be the one to surpass all of his accolades.
Kobe Bryant’s death has impacted the entire world. Not only has the world lost a great sportsman, but an advocate for women, equality and an all-round great human being. The backstory detailing why they were in the helicopter makes it even more heart-breaking. The world has definitely lost nine people who could have impacted the world greatly, and that is why this tragedy has affected everyone, not just basketball fans.
