Why is Musical.ly shutting down?

Published on

Musical.ly has shut down but users will still be able to enjoy the experience and more by upgrading to a TikTok account.

The Musical.ly app has been out of service since 2 August 2018. This is since the acquisition of the app by a similar app, TikTok. Those who use Musical.ly will automatically be moved to a TikTok account when they upgrade their Musical.ly app. Chinese company, Bytedance, owner of TikTok and now by acquisition, Musical.ly, claims that the TikTok app is now inclusive of all the great features from both platforms. This is amongst other upcoming and fresh features.

The co-founder of Musical.ly and Vice President of TikTok, Alex Zhu, had this to say in TikTok’s official statement, “We want to capture the world’s creativity and knowledge under this new name and remind everyone to treasure every precious life moment. Combining Musical.ly and TikTok is a natural fit given the shared mission of both experiences – to create a community where everyone can be a creator,” he said.

Musical.ly sported around 100 million monthly active users  whilst TikTok has 500 million active users per month. Seemingly, this acquisition is a guaranteed success.
