Ratanga Junction closed down in May 2018. The popular Cape Town theme park had been operational for 19 years when the closure was formalised and the announcement made. The closure was stipulated as inevitable because the land on which the theme park was situated was always meant for development.
In 2018, Rabie Property Group Director, John Chapman commented on the closure and clarified that the new development would offer more lifestyle, entertainment and amusement aspects. Speaking on the disadvantages of running a theme park, he stated, “The oversized facility, lack of consistent demand for a theme park, seasonal weather, expensive maintenance and running costs, as well as the ageing equipment, had all contributed to an unprofitable facility when we acquired it.”
