Why did Khensani Maseko commit suicide?

It has been speculated that Khensani Maseko’s suicide was a result of having been raped.

Khensani Maseko took her own life on Friday, 3 August 2018, after a post on Instagram inclusive of her day of birth, day of passing and the words: “NO ONE DESERVES TO BE RAPED!”.  Many have speculated from this that Maseko’s actions were in response to her allegedly having been raped. Rhodes University has confirmed that Maseko reported the alleged incident in July 2018, saying it occurred in May of the same year, and it was decided that she should go home for a period of time. She was meant to come back to the university this week and attend a meeting with a team of investigators and supporters.

A family representative had the following to say: “As a family, we do not take lightly the circumstances leading up to Khensani’s death. We would like to explicitly express that we condemn, in the strongest possible terms, any form of violence and abuse against women and more particularly rape against women. We urge that the law should be allowed to take its course, “they stated.

Khensani Maseko was a third-year BA student and an active participant in campus politics. She was a Student Representative Council (SRC) alumnus and an EFF member.
