What plans does the Alliance Political Council have to respond to unrest?

The ANC issued a statement on the Alliance Political Council meeting and plans that the alliance has started to mobilise, so as to ensure community engagement in response to the unrest.

In a statement on the Alliance Political Council on Thursday, 15 July 2021, the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP), and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) informed the public that together, they have all begun the mobilisation of their structures and communities against the violence and destruction that has hit many communities, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng. The ANC stated that there was a meeting of the Alliance Political Council on Thursday morning, comprising the national officials and office bearers of the ANC, SACP, and COSATU. The council called on the state to strengthen its efforts to end the unrest.

The council stated that it would undertake community engagements to discourage looting and violence, and mobilise community members to participate in clean-up operations in affected areas. It also assured that these interventions would be within the COVID-19 preventative regulations. The council also called on South Africans to forge broad unity in defence of the country’s democracy. It stated that there is a need to come together, and called for the counter-revolutionary actions represented by the violence, looting, destruction, and the economic sabotage to stop with immediate effect.

The council commended communities and different sectors of society that have taken a stance against the unrest, and encouraged them to stand firm. It further stated that those communities are setting a clear example of the active citizenry that is needed to defend the democracy, constitution, and the rule of law.

On the matter of eThekwini, the council noted that the fuelling of racial tensions aimed at perpetuating lawlessness were denounced in the meeting. The council further called on South Africans to unite to defeat any attempts at sowing racial and ethnic divisions, and concluded by expressing its support for the government’s intervention efforts.
