The Western Cape has been announced as the first province to receive the long-awaited commercial EMU trains, as part of the Department of Transport’s plan to revive PRASA.
Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula took to Twitter on Monday, 19 October 2020, to salute Raymond Maseko and his team for being behind the introduction of the first commercial electrical multiple units (EMU) trains. This was after Maseko took to the platform to share a video of the first commercial EMU that was operating from a train station in the Western Cape.
The video also acted as confirmation of the steps by the Department of Transport to revive the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). The first of those steps was the introduction of the 3 100 security personnel, which were in-sourced, with the introduction of the EMU trains being the second step. Currently, there has been no word on where the next trains will be introduced.
Mbalula reacted to the video shared; he stated, “It had a long journey to get there – commuters in Cape Town could not be more happy.”
