Afrikaans contemporary drama Die Seemeeu is scheduled to hit South African cinemas on Friday, 5 April 2019.

The film takes a modern day spin on the classic 1895 play of the same name by Anton Chekhov.

The film is set in an Afrikaans sea side town and tells the story of a self-absorbed theatre actress, Irene, her elderly brother Piet and her neglected son, Konstant. Directed by Christiaan Olwagen, the movie takes the audience on a journey exploring the struggles Irene encounters as she tries to prosper in her acting career, whilst involving the various other characters in her dramatic pursuit.

The movie explores themes such as substance abuse, violence and sexual intimacy, which form part of the forefront of the storyline.

Die Seemeeu is delivered in Afrikaans and accompanied by English subtitles. It stars esteemed South African actors such as Sandra Prinsloo, Marius Weyers, Gerben Kemper, Alyzzander Fourie, Deon Lotz, Rolanda Marais, Martelize Klover, Albert Prestorius, Geon Nel and Cintaine Schutte.
