Van Damme takes neutral stance on DA Federal Leader candidates

Published on

Phumzile Van Damme is one of the executive members of the DA who have maintained neutrality for the most contested seat in the leading opposition party, which is of Federal Leader.

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Phumzile Van Damme took to Twitter on Thursday, 29 October 2020, to wish interim Federal Leader, John Steenhuisen and Federal Leader hopeful, Mbali Ntuli good luck ahead of the DA congress. The two, Steenhuisen and Ntuli, are set to contest for the permanent seat of Federal Leader, which Steenhuisen temporarily assumed when Mmusi Maimane left the party.

Van Damme has decided not to publicly vouch for either Steenhuisen or Ntuli, despite having publicly endorsed Mike Morairty for Federal Council Chairperson over Helen Zille. Van Damme still faces backlash as one of the most prominent remaining Black DA members, therefore, her vouching for either one could spark unwanted conversation.

Van Damme stated, “I hope delegates won’t be swayed by harmful narratives aimed at reducing Black leaders to just their race and determining the value and worth on that basis. Live non-racialism!”
