Phumzile Van Damme took to Twitter to confirm that the Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies has agreed to meet with Facebook, in a move to tackle the proliferation of fake news.

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow Minister of Communications, Telecommunications and Postal Services, Phumzile Van Damme took to Twitter on Tuesday, 16 February 2021, to confirm that the committee has agreed to meet with Facebook. The DA is looking to have the social media company address various areas of concern, such as the proliferation of fake news and hate speech.

Moreover, the company is expected to answer questions on the contentious matter of the change in the privacy policy by the company. The effects of the change in the privacy policy not only affect Facebook, but also WhatsApp, which is owned by the company. Currently, there are questions on whether there should be a move to other social media platforms and instant messaging apps. Moreover, in light of the upcoming local elections, the leading opposition party seeks to determine if Facebook will attempt to filter misinformation that might be spread on social media.
