Van Damme and Mohlala exchange words over SABC retrenchments

Phumzile Van Damme was embroiled in an exchange with the SABC’s Deputy Board Chairperson, Mamodupi Mohlala over the public broadcaster’s planned retrenchments that have been topical of late.

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow Minister of Communications, Telecommunications and Postal Services, Phumzile Van Damme, on Wednesday, 18 November 2020, was embroiled in a back-and-forth with the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) Deputy Board Chairperson, Mamodupi Mohlala. The exchange was over the public broadcaster’s cost-cutting and restructuring methods, in particular, the imminent retrenchments.

The interaction stemmed from Van Damme’s lambaste of Mohlala’s management style. Van Damme was not complimentary, as she suggested that this is not the first time that Mohlala has allegedly sparked discord in a parastatal she has been deployed to.

Van Damme wrote, “We are back meeting with the SABC board at 19:00 tonight. This sort of in-fighting will not be tolerated. We are dealing with hundreds of people possibly losing jobs and as she always does in *every* entity she has served, Mamodupi brings toxicity and wants squabbles while Rome burns.”

Mohlala then accused Van Damme of “attacking black women,” to which she responded by asserting that the matter would be addressed during the meeting.
