US Embassy honours Mkhize for department’s HIV and COVID-19 efforts

The US Embassy has presented Dr Zweli Mkhize with The Ambassador’s Award for his leadership and the manner in which his department is dealing with the pandemic.

The United States of America (USA) Embassy took to Twitter on Wednesday, 20 January 2021, to detail how it has honoured Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize with a prestigious award. The award was presented by the US Ambassador to South Africa, Lana Marks.

The post stated, “Ambassador Marks today presented The Ambassador’s Award to Dr Zweli Mkhize for ‘Outstanding Leadership and Collaboration in Public Health’ in response to South Africa’s HIV epidemic and ‘Exceptional Stewardship’ of the COVID-19 response.”

It is unclear what contribution Mkhize had in South Africa’s response to the HIV epidemic. During the tumultuous times of the epidemic, current Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi worked in addressing the matter. Mkhize, during the first wave of COVID-19, was lauded for his management of the pandemic. However, with the resurgence, there have been signs that most of the claims that the country has been preparing for what is currently happening may have been falls, which has put Mkhize’s leadership into question.
