Urgent bid to extend social grant top-ups rejected

SASSA took to Twitter to reveal that the Gauteng High Court has rejected the urgent bid to have the social grant top-ups extended, affecting some seven million beneficiaries.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) took to Twitter on Monday, 2 November 2020, to confirm that the Gauteng High Court has rejected the urgent bid to have the social grant top-ups extended. The bid was made in light of the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants being extended by three months.

The matter was brought before the court by an organisation called the Black Sash Trust. This was in the hopes of having the top-ups extended for as long as the COVID-19 SRD grant was also being extended. The extension would have provided relief to some seven million beneficiaries.

However, what has become a matter of contention is why the extension has only been made for the COVID-19 SRD grant, and not other COVID-19 grants. The COVID-19 Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) is also currently wrapping up outstanding payment claims. The recent announcement seeks to inform the masses that top-ups on grants for pensioners and children will soon go back to the normal amount.
