Undercover investigative journalist killed in Ghana

The Ghanaian public on Thursday, 17 January 2019, condemned the killing of investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein Suale, by an unknown assailant on Wednesday night, 16 January 2019, in Accra.

They took to social media and various websites, which reported the case, and condemned the act describing it as “barbaric,” adding that it is something that should be not tolerated in a budding democratic society like Ghana.

Hussein Suale was a member of the Ghana’s undercover journalists, Anas Aremeyaw Anas team, which exposed the rot at the Ghana Football Association, which led to the dismissal of the FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi and a host of referees.

He was shot at 11pm by an unknown assailant at Madina, one of the most populous suburbs in Accra. He was reportedly shot three times, twice in the chest and again in the neck by an unidentified man who was said to be riding a motorbike. He was rushed to the police hospital in Accra but confirmed dead on arrival and his body had been deposited at the morgue of the same facility.

Reacting to the death of Sual , Anas posted a video in which the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, was issuing threats and wrote “Sad news, but we shall not be silenced. Rest in peace, Ahmed.”

The Executive Director of The Press Foundation, TPF, Listowell Yesu Bukarson, has described the murder of a member of the Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger PI team as “shameful,” calling it “a massive attack on journalism.”

The murder of Suele has put fear in journalists in Ghana as the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is yet to issue statement on the killing of the journalist.
