Ugandan musician Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, granted bail

A Magistrates Court in Uganda has on Thursday afternoon, 2 May 2019, granted musician cum legislator Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, a cash bail.

Bobi Wine was the first suspect to appear before court from Luzira Prison via video conferencing.

Speaking from prison via a video conferencing facility Bobi Wine told the court, “I want to emphasize that it is not me on trial. It is the court itself on trial.

“Whatever you decide in that court, your honor, that is not my business. My business is standing for the truth. My business is standing for what is morally right. My business is standing for what morally beneficial to you, to me, to those people who are persecuting me under the guise of prosecuting me, and all the people of Uganda. Your honor, if standing for what is right will earn me my freedom, I will thank God for it. But your honor, if standing for what is right is going to keep me in this prison, then I will thank God even louder. After all, I have a lot of work to do, even here in prison.”

Following his successful bail application Magistrate Esther Nahirya barred the legislator from engaging in unlawful demonstration.

Bobi Wine on Monday,29 April 2019, remanded at Luzira prison after being charged with disobedience of statutory duty, an offence prosecution says he committed in July 2018.

The charges against the legislator cum singer stem from a protest he organized against the social media tax in Kampala city center last year.
