UDM “disappointed” by Minister Mbalula’s dealings with taxi drivers

The United Democratic Movement has issued a statement accusing the Department of Transport of not taking SANTACO’s demands seriously, further expressing disappointment at Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula.

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) issued a statement on Monday, 29 June 2020, stating that it is “disappointed with Transport Minister, Fikile Mbabula’s failure to address disgruntled taxi drivers a few days ago.”

The statement suggested that the Department of Transport, under Minister Mbalula’s leadership, is not doing enough to address the concerns of taxi drivers. The party expressed that instead of leading diplomatically, they believe that the minister has thrown tantrums.

While the first part of the statement suggested that the UDM stands with the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), the second half addressed a few concerns. The UDM hinted at its support for the formalisation of the taxi industry. Moreover, the party stated that it does not support taxis loading at the full capacity, as that increases the risk of spreading COVID-19 more rapidly.
