South Africans have taken to social media to express their condolences, following news of the passing of anti-apartheid and human rights lawyer, Advocate George Bizos.

President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed the passing of Advocate George Bizos in a commemorative tweet on Wednesday, 9 September 2020. The president stated, “The news of the passing of George Bizos is very sad for us as a country. An incisive legal mind and architect of our Constitution, he contributed immensely to our democracy.”

Bizos is reported to have passed on due to natural causes in his home. Aged 92 at the time of his passing, Bizos had an illustrious career which earned him the respect of many. He was part of the legal team that represented late friend and former president, Nelson Mandela, at the Rivonia Trial. The activist was also part of the legal teams that looked into the passing of anti-apartheid icons such as Steve Biko and Ahmed Timol. Most recently, he represented some of the families that lost family members during the Marikana Massacre.

Tributes for Bizos have been pouring in on social media, with numerous public figures taking the time to celebrate not only his illustrious career, but the man himself as well.
