Transport Ministry confirms agreement has been reached in CPT taxi situation

Minister Fikile Mbalula has confirmed that following a press briefing on developments in the Cape Town taxi industry, an agreement has been reached with the implementation of serious measures.

On Monday, 2 August 2021, Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula confirmed that following discussions with the two taxi associations embroiled in the recent taxi violence in the Western Cape, an agreement had been reached. The implementation of some measures to be complied with by both parties is also expected.

Mbalula confirmed that some of these measures require that all associations instruct their members to return to service in line with the authorities issued with their operating licenses, and do so in a manner safe for the public. License holders are expected to operate only in their legal routes, which will be monitored and result in action being taken against those in breach of the instruction.

The Transport Ministry also warned that should there be further acts of violence, all affected routes will be closed for minibus taxi operations for a period determined by the MEC and affected operating licenses suspended. Mbalula further warned that any other associations found to be involved in or promoting violence would also be suspended or deregistered, and that law enforcement capacity and deployment would be reviewed and strengthened in affected areas to ensure adherence to laws.
