The Transport Department took to Twitter to stipulate one of the resolutions from its recently held National Taxi Lekgotla, which is to address the prevalence of illegal taxi operators.
The Department of Transport, led by Minister Fikile Mbalula, took to Twitter on Thursday, 5 November 2020, to continue sharing the resolutions from the National Taxi Lekgotla, which was hosted last week. The lekgotla was a culmination of provincial taxi lekgotlas in the department’s efforts to engage taxi industry stakeholders about formalising the industry.
The latest resolution that was shared revealed the department’s commitment to tackling the prevalence of illegal taxi operators. The matter is believed to be a contributor to taxi wars over routes, as well as the perpetuation of violence. According to the department, “They worsen the industry safety profile as they are prone to employing illegal and dangerous tactics to get customers and maximise profits.”
