The Department of Labour and Employment has made available the notes of Thulas Nxesi’s address before the NCOP, as it relates to his department.
Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi, on Tuesday, 13 October 2020, addressed the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on a variety of matters relating to his department. The address sought to provide an update on the progress made on measures to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on employment and labour. Moreover, it also addressed allegations and cases of fraud and corruption relating to COVID-19 procurement processes.
A pressing matter that the report highlighted was that of the preliminary findings by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on cases of possible corruption at the height of the pandemic. According to the statement, there are approximately 157 cases to investigate. The bulk of the investigations are said to relate to employers attempting to defraud the UIF.
The top tier criminal activity that the SIU is set to investigate relates to 38 cases of employers either withholding or underpaying employees’ COVID-19 TERS grants. Second to that are cases of employers using incorrect UIF reference numbers.
