The Tripartite Alliance Secretariat has released a statement on the topical restructuring of the public broadcaster, and has expressed opposition to the planned retrenchments that have been announced.
The Tripartite Alliance Secretariat, which constitutes the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), took to Twitter on Tuesday, 17 November 2020, to circulate a statement on the planned retrenchments at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The statement comes in the wake of SABC employees embarking on a lie down during their lunch break and a subsequent go-slow.
This was over the announcement of 400 planned retrenchments as part of its restructuring efforts. The retrenched employees will reportedly have to apply to fill 100 positions that are expected to be made available in the process.
In addressing the situation, the Tripartite Alliance Secretariat categorically stated that it is against the retrenchments and has never supported the proposal. The statement also suggested that the push to retrench workers is in an effort to partially privatise the public broadcaster. This is a notion that the alliance vehemently opposed because of the SABC having a public mandate to fulfil, which it would fail to do if it were to be partially privatised.
