Temporary UIF processes announced to limit unnecessary travel and physical contact during lockdown period
The Department of Employment and Labour has announced the relaxation of Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) processes, in an attempt to minimise contact amidst the coronavirus outbreak.
In a statement today, 9 April 2020, the Department of Employment and Labour announced that it has relaxed processes to enable UIF claims during the national lockdown. The statement stipulated that claims will be allowed to be paid without compulsory documentation for those who are already receiving benefits from the fund. In order to avoid unnecessary travel and physical contact, beneficiaries will be contacted via SMS and be required to confirm their unemployment status and provide their banking details
New UIF applications can be submitted via email or fax if pertaining to maternity, illness, adoption, and parental benefits. The department has reiterated that the SMS functionality and no-contact processing will only be permitted during the lockdown period.
