The Brief

Taxi strike to affect thousands of Johannesburg commuters on Monday

Taxi associations have warned of imminent strike action in Johannesburg’s northern areas on Monday, 25 June 2018.

Two associations, the Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand and Sandton Taxi Association (ARMSTA), and the Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA), have alerted the public of a planned strike or “one-day shutdown” on Monday, 25 June 2018.

In a notice circulated late last week, the two associations said the strike is in direct protest against actions carried out by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department against minibus taxis in the city, including the “impoundment of vehicles” and the “removal of roadworthiness discs.” The taxi associations added that they hoped to “draw the attention of the Minister of Transport [Bonginkosi ‘Blade’ Nzimande] about the ill-treatment of the taxi industry by the government.”

Commuters, especially those in the affected areas, including routes in the following areas: Alexandra, Randburg, Sandton, Midrand, Woodmead and Modderfontein, have been advised to make alternative transport arrangements. Although the strike will primarily affect those who use minibus taxis, it is, however, likely that motorists may also be affected. Protest action by the minibus taxi industry typically involves illegal roadblocks, intimidation and mild levels of violence. Caution is advised.
