Taking a professional development course will not only be beneficial to you, but the company you work for as well; here’s how to ask for time to attend one.
Even the most redundant role can be improved by taking a professional development course. These can take anything between a few days and a couple of weeks. Many a time, we can’t afford to take paid leave, so here’s how to ask for time off and accommodate both.
Firstly, you need to ascertain what kind of training you need. Whatever training you take on, it must complement your already existing skills. You will need to draw a list of the skills you possess and the areas of your role in which you feel you’re excelling. Thereafter, you can begin your research, using as many resources as you possibly can, but bear in mind to seek accredited courses that are tailored to your skills.
After you’ve conducted your research, now comes the time to sell the idea of the course to your employer. When you do so, be sure to mention not only how the training will be beneficial to your own career growth, but to that of the company as well. Mention that the training will enable you to do your job more efficiently and make you one of the best in your industry.
You can also sell the idea by assuring your employer that the knowledge you acquire from the training will be shared with your colleagues. Offer to share notes and any other resources from the training; better yet, offer to conduct a short feedback meeting, where you can put some of the knowledge into action. For your employer to agree to the training, it would be wise of you to choose a programme that aligns with your company’s direction and values. This will show your employer that you have the company’s best interests at heart.
