Now in its fifteenth year, Suidoosterfees returns this April.
In honour of the festival’s fifteenth anniversary, this years Suidoosterfees theme is ‘Fabulous 15’.
The festival saw its first inception in 2003 and celebrates the Afrikaans language while remaining inclusive of other languages as well.
The Suidoosterfees is a cultural arts festival named after the infamous winterly wind that sweeps through the Cape around this time of year.
Those crafters of the festival had the intention of it being an affordable and accessible event for those who under usual circumstances would not visit the theatre.
Fifteen years on, the festival remains an inclusive event for all.
Suidoosterfees is a celebration of all people that make up the Cape metropolis.
This year’s festival will take place at the Artscape Theatre from 26 April – 1 May.
Each day, the programme will run from around 9:00 – 22:00. Shows run throughout the day.
This year’s event will showcase a variety of shows, performances and exhibitions.
Music enthusiasts will be treated to numerous live performances, including’ Karoo Swing Innie Kaap’ which is a concert celebration of iconic Afrikaans musicians and songs. The concert will see performances by talented musicians, Emo Adams; Bobby van Jaarsveld and Katlego Maboe. The concert will be hosted in the Opera House. Tickets range from R100.00 – R150.00. Dance lovers have a wide selection of shows to watch at the festival. One of the must-see shows is ‘The Johaar Mosaval Journey: Dsitrict Six to the Royal Ballet’. This ballet presented by the Cape Town City Ballet celebrates the life of dancer Johaar Mosaval who became Queen Eliazabeth II favourite principal dancer during his twenty-five-year career in the UK. Tickets R40.00 – R120.00. Date 28 April 2018.
Theatre-buffs should be sure to catch ‘Rokkie’ from 27 – 30 April. Charlton George plays a fifty-year-old transgender person awaiting her gender re-assignment surgery. The character shares her most intimate memories with the audience. Tickets R55.00 – R110.00.
