Here are student tips for young South Africans who may be struggling to make a decent side income whilst studying.
As a student in South Africa, you may have to pay exorbitant tuition fees. Furthermore, making an income may prove difficult in-between your academic commitments. Here are a few suggested ways to earn a basic stipend while studying:
- Waitressing/Bartending: This tried and tested option is always a good way to earn extra pocket money. Choose a busy restaurant or bar to work at part-time.
- Tutoring: There are many types of tutoring; private, academic and agency tutoring. Gutsytutoring is one place to look for work opportunities.
- Promotional work: Promotional work consists of individuals usually promoting certain types of liquor over the short course of a few hours for decent pay.
- Work at concerts: Look for opportunities to work selling tickets or working at concert doors.
- Freelance Work: Although not the most lucrative paths, taking on one or two freelancing jobs in your field may provide you with some experience and make you a little extra money.
- House Sitting: Is it not great that people will pay you money just to live in their house for a month?
- Baby Sitting: This one may be a little more difficult than looking after a house, but if you are good with children, why not give it a try?
- Selling goods online: You can sell your old valuables or come up with a lucrative product to sell online.
- Photography: If you have a good visual eye, taking photographs for sites such as Shutterstock may prove lucrative.
- Save up your loan/bursary money: If you have been provided with a loan or bursary money to buy books, try to find the cheapest books or look for specials. This way you can save that extra money for other necessities.
Student life can be challenging and yet rewarding. Make wise financial decisions and you may complete your studies not only with a degree certificate but some extra money in your pocket too.
