Steenhuisen looks to ANC faction to support motion to impeach Mkhwebane

Published on

In his weekly newsletter, John Steenhuisen noted that a process to potentially impeach Mkhwebane is underway, further looking to the suggested Ramaphosa faction to endorse the motion.

Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), John Steenhuisen took to Twitter on Wednesday, 10 March 2021, to circulate his weekly newsletter. The newsletter noted the details surrounding the motion put forward by the DA to have Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane impeached.

Previously, the DA had suggested that it had put the motion forward already. However, Mbhazima Shilowa then clarified that no such motion had been tabled to Parliament. This was after Ace Magashule made it clear that Mkhwebane would not be removed from office.

Therefore, Steenhuisen appears to be relying on the suggested factional conflict within the ruling party for the motion to be passed, as he is believed to be looking for votes from the supposed Ramaphosa faction. This was made more clear in the title of the newsletter; “Getting rid of the (Radical Economic Transformation) RET faction Public Protector.”

Steenhuisen stated, “If a motion of impeachment does come to pass, and enough ANC MPs support it, this would be a classic example of political realignment that the DA has long called for. It is indeed the only route out of SA’s deadlock.”
