Steenhuisen calls for an end to all lockdown restrictions and state of disaster

Published on

Steenhuisen has welcomed the easing of restrictions and move to adjusted level two, and has called for the president to declare a deadline for all restrictions and state of disaster.

Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), John Steenhuisen issued a statement on Sunday, 12 September 2021, calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to announce an end date to all lockdown restrictions and the state of disaster. This was following the announcement of South Africa’s move to adjusted level two of the lockdown.

Steenhuisen noted that this deadline should now be within sight and, at the very latest, announced by mid-November to allow for businesses affected by restrictions to plan to bridge their business up until the deadline. He further stressed that should the president not think this is what needs to happen, then he and the government will need to provide reasons as to why not. Moreover, they should set out a criteria required by cabinet to be met in order for the state of disaster to be lifted and for everyone to know whether decisions are fair and rational.
