StatsSA reveals decrease in transmission and distribution of electricity in 2019

StatsSA has delivered the results of the electricity, gas and water industry, with an increase in total income, significantly decreased profit margin, and decreased generation and distribution.

Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) released its key findings on the electricity, gas and water industry for 2019 on Thursday, 2 September 2021. The total income for the industry in 2019 was R291.6 billion. This total income is said to represent a 6.4 percent increase per annum over the income in the matching survey of 2016.

Capital expenditure on new assets in 2019 of R49.7 billion decreased by 33.8 percent, compared to 2016. Generation transmission and distribution fell by R24.6 billion, and the profit margin for the industry was at minus 3.9 percent, the lowest recorded since 2010.

Manufacturing and distribution of gaseous fuels through mains reported the highest profit margin in 2019 of 21.3 percent. StatsSA also found that the industry had employed less people, decreasing by 3.4 percent between 2016 and 2019. Electricity was less generated in 2019 compared to 2010 and 2013, despite an increase between 2016 and 2019.
