StatsSA releases mining production and sales results for August 2021

StatsSA has released the mining production and sales results, reporting a production increase of 2.0 percent, while mineral sales increased by 35.1 percent year-on-year in August 2021.

On Tuesday, 12 October 2021, Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) released its key findings on the production and sales of the mining industry for August 2021. Mining is reported to have increased by 2.0 percent year-on-year in August 2021.

The largest positive contributors were gold at 17.0 percent, contributing 2.0 percentage points; iron ore at 22.9 percent, contributing 1.9 percentage points; and PGMs at 4.4 percent and contributing 1.0 percentage points to the increase. Coal is said to have been a negative contributor, as it decreased -8.5 percent contributing -2.2 percentage points.

In terms of mining sales for August 2021, mineral sales at current prices increased by 35.1 percent year-on-year in August 2021. The largest contributors were PGMs at 55.1 percent, contributing 18.9 percentage points; gold at 52.5 percent, contributing 7.5 percentage points; coal increased at 23.9 percent and contributed 4.5 percentage points, while iron ore increase by 15.0 percent and contributed 2.2 percentage points to increased mineral sales.
