StatsSA post and telecommunications findings reveal decline in employment

StatsSA has released results of the post and telecommunications industry for 2019, reporting an increase in income with a decrease in the number of employments within the industry.

Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) released the results of the post and telecommunications industry survey for 2019 on Thursday, 9 September 2021. It reported that income for the industry had increased to R352.2 billion by 4.5 percent per year, compared to income reported in 2016. Telecommunications contributed 95 percent with an amount of R334.7 billion.

Capital expenditure on new assets was reported to have increased by 1.5 percent to R35.8 billion, with telecommunications contributing the most to total expenditure of 98.7 percent or R35.3 billion. The industry also recorded its lowest profit margin since 2010 of 0.8 percent.

The industry is noted to be employing fewer people, with the number being 98 495. This indicates a decrease of 0.6 percent compared to 2016, with 100 402 people being employed. Telecommunications recorded a loss of 5 498 jobs, however, the share of females employed increased from 39 percent in 2010 to 41 percent in 2019.
