The State Theatre will host a free concert to celebrate the life and mourn the passing of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
The State Theatre in Pretoria will present a concert to honour Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on Friday, 13 April 2018.
The tribute concert will, according to organisers, be a celebration of her life and mourning of her passing through song, dance, poetry and storytelling.
Those performing include, Sibongile Khumalo, Rebecca Malope, Oliver Mtukudzi, Thami Mdluli featuring the Soweto String Quartet, Zahara and the Tshwane Gospel Choir.
Madikizela-Mandela was an avid supporter of the arts. Her last visit to the State Theatre was in August 2017 to see a production of Marikana the Musical.
In a statement, the State theatre has said:
“The theatre will continue to honour her life and memory by staging theatrical works that question the status quo and critically engage with the complex layers and internal contradictions of the new South Africa. Her spirit of courage will forever inspire us. May her soul rest in peace.”
The tribute concert will be held in the Opera Theatre. The show is scheduled for 14:00 – 16:00 (Doors open 13:30).
There is no cost to attend the concert, but space is limited. Seats will be allocated on first-come, first-serve basis.
The dress code for the event is all black in honour of the struggle icon.
