State creates WhatsApp hotline to register for vaccination

Published on

The state has announced that it has created a WhatsApp hotline as another alternative to register for the COVID-19 Sisonke Vaccination Programme, as it is set to launch phase two soon.

The South African Government took to Twitter on Monday, 10 May 2021, to reveal that it has created a WhatsApp hotline as an alternative and more accessible method of registering for the COVID-19 vaccine. Previously, it was advised to access the online platform to register for the vaccine, which would require the elderly who may not be technologically savvy to get assistance.

The introduction of the WhatsApp hotline reduces the need for assistance as the app is a commonly used one amongst people with smartphones, including the elderly. Therefore, in sharing how people can register through the app, the department has stipulated that one will need their identification number. Moreover, should they not have or know their identification number, the government has provided ways for one to retrieve the number.

The announcement comes as the country is set to begin with phase two of the Sisonke Vaccination Programme. Considering the timelines, the anticipated third wave would have hit by the time the majority of the country receives the vaccine.
