Being a die-hard fan of the series, Friends, I am absolutely elated about the reboot, however, I am concerned that it will not live up to the incredible standard it ended on.
Having being born in 1994, I arrived just in time for the worldwide phenomenon known as Friends. I have been obsessed with the show since my preteens and have watched each episode about 50 times, if not more. My obsession has led to me being able to recite all the dialogues and re-watch all ten seasons at least three times a year. I still remember my devastation when the series ended in 2004. At just ten years old, majority of the comedy went over my head, but as I’ve gotten older, I can truly appreciate the genius behind every line.
On Friday, 21 February 2020, HBO announced that the reboot has been confirmed. With all cast members sharing a single caption, “It’s happening…”, me, along with the rest of their fans, felt as though all our dreams were coming to reality. My concern comes in when thinking about what the new season will include. The Friends storyline is based on a group of twenty-something-year-olds figuring life out, and all its unexpected occurrences. Sixteen years later, the friends are now in their fifties, with all of them having figured out their various paths in life. That is with the exception of Joey, who had a failed self-titled sitcom following the culmination of the show’s tenth season.
Friends has left a lasting legacy, so much so, that the audience has grown with time, allowing for younger generations to jump onto the bandwagon. What will the reboot consist of? Will it be as iconic as those ten years of comedic genius? Only time will tell, and I will definitely be one of the first waiting to see if my all-time favourite show remains that way.
