South African celebrities share their condolences over Khensani Maseko’s death

In the wake of news of the passing of 23-year old Rhodes University student, Khensani Maseko, various South African celebrities have shared their condolences.

Social media has been abuzz since the weekend with messages of sadness, regret, confusion and even anger as South Africans became aware of the alleged suicide of a third-year Rhodes University student, Khensani Maseko. Maseko’s last post on Instagram, which was sent out on Friday shortly before her death, read, “NO ONE DESERVES TO BE RAPED!!” Maseko also posted her date of birth, and Friday’s date. South African celebrity personalities including, Boity Thulo, Nomzamo Mbatha and Jackie Phamotse have since weighed in on the matter with thoughts and condolences.

Nomzamo Mbatha posted a photograph of Maseko with the caption, “She has a name… #Khensani #RIPKhensani #BeautifulAngel.” Mbatha then wrote, “Someday, soon… God will fulfil the dream to build the haven for the depressed. Their Lighthouse home! God hear my prayer🙏🏾.”

In response to the tragedy, Boity Thulo wrote, “I am so so sorry, Khensani. Rest, baby girl. 😢💔 #RIPKhensani #SihleMaphumuloMustBeJailed #EnoughisEnough.”

Meanwhile, self-titled social activist, Jackie Phamotse took it upon herself to address a man who deemed Maseko’s actions as cowardice. Phamotse responded by saying, “How dare you call rape victims cowards!! Her pain was deeper than anyone’s understanding. We can’t possibly dismiss the actual problem, which is the rapist! Who is he? What’s happening with his case? She needed help not to be further victimized. This is nauseating.”

Khensani Maseko was a third-year BA student at Rhodes University. She was a member of the university’s Student Representative Council. The university flew the Rhodes flag at half-mast on Monday in honour of Maseko’s memory.
