Some tips for all the newbie at-home workers

Although I wish it were under better circumstances, I want to welcome all the newbie at-home workers and provide you with a few tricks and tips whilst we collectively hope for the best.

Due to the coronavirus, many office workers now find themselves working from home. This new work environment may seem a little unsettling, but there are ways to keep yourself disciplined and motivated, such as timing yourself, setting up a suitable workspace, and still getting dressed for the job.

Many office workers are motivated by their environment; colleagues who are more productive and having seniors and managers looking over their shoulders keep them in a state of concentration. At home, although there still may still be deadlines or expectations, you may not feel this outside pressure, leading perhaps to a laxer approach to your work.

Set a timer for yourself and work in chunks

Choose a certain amount of time and then set your timer with a specific intention of getting something done within those hour/s. Remember to take short breaks in between.

The timer will act as an external source of pressure, inspiring productivity.

Work in a suitable space and cut off all distractions

You may be tempted to work in your bed, but this is probably the worst thing you can do because your mind will interpret it as time to sleep.

Rather, find a comfortable and quiet space in the house and make sure your workspace is neat.

Still get dressed for work

You may be tempted to stay in your pyjamas, and although this can be great for a while, two days or so in and you’ll end up feeling dirty and lethargic.

Get up, shower and put on some clothes that make you feel good.

In essence, these three activities will remind your brain that it is time to work, whereas having no external pressure from a timer, working in bed, and staying in your pajamas will lead your brain to associate it with a time of rest – leaving you less alert.

Welcome to the world of working from home. Stay productive and healthy at-home workers!
