Shivambu reiterates EFF’s stance on supposed undermining of separation of power by Ramaphosa

Floyd Shivambu has noted the EFF’s withdrawal from the election of Speaker of the NA, stating that the hiring and firing of speakers undermines the separation of power.

The Deputy Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Floyd Shivambu posted an EFF statement declaring that it will not be participating in the election of the Speaker of Parliament on Wednesday, 18 August 2021. According to Shivambu, the party will not participate in what he called the “unconstitutional rubber stamping of a Speaker who was deployed by President Ramaphosa.”

Shivambu further stated that Speakers of Parliament could not be hired and fired easily by a president, as this undermines separation of powers. The EFF’s statement claims that for a Head of the Executive to chop and change a Speaker of Parliament as and when he wishes is an undermining of the spirit of South Africa’s constitutional democracy.

The party pointed out that it is for this reason that it will not participate in “the rubber stamping of factional politics and arrangements that undermined the country’s constitutional order and democracy.” The EFF also informed that it would be consulting its legal representatives to establish whether it is permissible for President Cyril Ramaphosa to appoint and fire the head of an important division of state, and called Ramaphosa out for being persistent in supposedly undermining the separation of powers.
