Floyd Shivambu took to Twitter to endorse the proposed name change of William Nicol Drive to Winnie Madikizela Mandela Drive, which is believed to be the EFF’s stance too.
Deputy President of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Floyd Shivambu took to Twitter on Wednesday, 24 March 2021, to rally behind the proposed name change of William Nicol Drive to Winnie Madikizela Mandela Drive. The announcement was made by the City of Johannesburg earlier that day, whilst calling for comments on the suggested name change.
Shivambu and the EFF seem to be in support of the name change, as Mbuyiseni Ndlozi also took to Twitter to publicly endorse the name change. When the EFF first suggested a monumental location’s name being changed to honour the late struggle stalwart, it initially called for the Cape Town International Airport to be named after Madikizela-Mandela. However, that suggestion was met with resistance. Therefore, the renaming of the popular public road is regarded as the compromise.
The response on the post from the public has been polarised. The biggest matter of contention has been whether the name change would mean that the road would be better taken care of. Some used the opportunity to highlight the continuous non-functioning traffic lights on the busy road.
