Shivambu criticises local endorsements of Habib’s possible reinstatement

Published on

Floyd Shivambu is amongst those criticising the South African political figures who are believed to be in favour of the possible reinstatement of Adam Habib as the SOAS Director.

Deputy President of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Floyd Shivambu took to Twitter on Wednesday, 7 April 2021, to comment on the reports of some South African political figures supposedly endorsing the possible reinstatement of Adam Habib. Habib is currently suspended from his role as the Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. The disgraced director was suspended due to the uproar caused by his use of the N-word during a virtual student meeting.

Therefore, when a statement was circulated suggesting that Thuli Madonsela, Barney Pityana, Justice Malala and Palesa Morudu are calling for the immediate reinstatement of Habib, it led to backlash. The figures reportedly claimed that Habib is not racist, therefore, suggestions of that nature are unfounded, according to them, hence the call for his immediate reinstatement.

Shiavambu, in reacting to the statement, suggested that the aforementioned figures are “nothing but a cabal of factionalists bidding for another narcissistic factionalist.” Moreover, he claimed that Habib being reinstated would do irreversible damage to the reputation of the tertiary institution.
