The National Treasury and SARB released a joint statement refuting claims of having received billions from Tokyo Sexwale, further reducing the allegations to a common scam.
The National Treasury took to Twitter on Monday, 19 April 2021, to issue a joint statement with the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) on the allegations of corruption alluded to by businessman and political figure, Tokyo Sexwale. Sexwale alleged to have deposited billions of rands to the aforementioned entities in COVID-19 relief funds, which he stated were not used accordingly.
Sexwale, in making the accusations, further suggested that the corruption affected relief funds which were initially earmarked at R3 050 in Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants. However, it was then allegedly wilted down to R350 due to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The joint statement has dismissed the claims as a common scam, stating, “National Treasury and the SARB have previously received correspondence from Mr Sexwale and many others that alleges that billions of rands have been stolen from a fund that has been referred to as the ‘White Spiritual Boy Trust’ and which was set up by a foreign donor.“
