SAPS reports increase in rape cases in new crime statistics

Published on

The SAPS has provided a detailed breakdown of the crime statistics for the third quarter of 2020, reporting an increase in rape cases.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) took to Twitter on Friday, 19 February 2021, to share the key takeaways from the presentation given by Minister Bheki Cele on the crime statistics for the third quarter of 2020. The SAPS revealed an overall increase in criminal activity, with the only decrease being in contact crimes, which decreased by 1.4 percent.

However, other crimes reportedly increased, such as rape, which saw an increase of five percent. It is believed that a large portion of the rape cases were reports of sexual assault that either took place at the home of the victim or the home of the perpetrator. The thread revealed that over 4 900 of the cases reported were of the aforementioned situation.

The overall increase in crime suggests that despite the curfew and the SAPS’ efforts to ensure adherence to COVID-19 safety regulations and restrictions, fighting criminal activity may have been negated.
