SAB responds to social media banter alleging listeriosis at brewery

On Monday, 5 March, South African Breweries (SAB) released a statement confirming that the Rosslyn Brewery is not impacted by the listeriosis outbreak in South Africa.

In the statement, SAB assured the public that none of its breweries, including the Rosslyn Brewery outside of Pretoria, is contaminated by listeriosis, an infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

The false claims were made on social media platforms – mainly as tongue-in-cheek banter by some users, with one user, writing on Facebook on 5 March, “Breaking News, another source of Listeriosis has been traced to Rosslyn Pretoria at the SAB plant. We are advised not to consume alcoholic beverages until further notice.”

SAB made assurances that it is safe to consume all of their products as “stringent quality standards are upheld in the beer production process at all times.”

The company said that it is trying to determine the source of the “malicious communication” and that will take the ”necessary action to correct this.”
