Comedy Central’s episode of AKA’s (real name Kiernan Forbes) roast aired on Monday night, 11 March 2019, and has been trending on social media since.
The popular Comedy Central Roast is an annual show in partnership with Showmax, which aims to honour celebrities while raising funds for the celebrity’s charity of choice. This year’s episode saw rapper AKA in the hot seat, while Pearl Thusi became the first black woman to be the Roast Master in the show’s 16-year history.
The panel consisted of Moshe Ndiki, Moonchild Sanelly, Davido, Francois van Coke, Joey Rasdien, Mark Fish, Nina Hastie and Penny Penny, who, according to Twitter users, stole the show. The Shangaan recording artist and reality TV star stole the hearts of South Africans last night with his peculiar lines. “I had a boy and I spent a lot of money on him, but today I’m proud because that boy was Aka [AKA]. You know, Aka is a Shangaan name,” he made one joke.
Pearl Thusi was also a force and held her own as Roast Master. “We need to respect Davido. His dad is a billionaire in Nigeria, he has billions of Nairas, but here, it’s like R100 here,” she roasted the rapper, referring to lyrics in one of his songs, where Davido alludes that women should be showered with money.
AKA was a great sport throughout the show, even taking in punches about his nemesis, fellow rapper Cassper Nyovest. Pearl Thusi opened the show with a Nyovest reference, saying: “Welcome to the show guys, I was just told that this is AKA’s very first #FillUp,” to which AKA laughed. Thusi was referring to Nyovest’s popular #FillUp events, where the rapper hosts concerts in stadiums and spends months marketing the shows, with the goal of filling up arenas that accommodate over 90 000 patrons.
An uncensored version of Roast of AKA will air tonight, 12 March 2019, on Showmax.
