Reality TV franchise, The Real Housewives of Johannesburg, makes its debut

The popular reality show franchise debuted on South African television screens and sparked conversation on Twitter, which resulted in the first episode trending.

After numerous problems, setbacks and an entire re-shoot and re-cast, this weekend saw the airing of the first episode of The Real Housewives of Johannesburg. The reality TV show franchise also has series set in cities such as New York, Beverly Hills, Potomac and Atlanta. The Johannesburg series debuted on 1Magic.

The cast of the series consists of vegetation expert Evodia Mogase as well as her daughter Mercy, spa owner Brinnette Seopela, former Miss Botswana 2nd Princess Naledi Willers, lawyer turned businesswoman Christall Kay, and golfer Busisiwe Ter Mors.

Twitter users were quick to share their views on the cast and the show as a whole, with twitter user @MariaNepembe saying “Brinnette is gorgeous. WOW!!! #RHOJ.”

@Pearl_Njabulo commented:

“The pressure to study and work hard for these cars and houses #RHOJ.”

“The reality series documents the highs and lows of the six fiery affluent characters, as they let Mzansi into their lives – from their luxurious homes to their prestigious family life,” said a representative from the channel.

The show has also sparked interest from international viewers of the franchise, with some taking to social media to enquire as to when the series will air in the US.
