President Cyril Ramaphosa is calling for peaceful negotiations in the ongoing violence between Palestinians and Israelis, which has captured headlines across the globe recently.
The President’s Desk took to Twitter on Monday, 17 May 2021, to circulate the weekly newsletter by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The president has broken his silence on the ongoing violence between Palestinians and Israelis. The resurgence of unrest stems from the reported bombing by Palestine on Israeli towns. While various local political formations and parties have already commented on the matter, the presidency had not released official word on it until now.
Ramaphosa was quoted as saying, “As lovers of freedom and of justice, we stand with the Palestinian people in their quest for self-determination, but also in their resistance against the deprivation of their human rights and the denial of their dignity.” Moreover, he drew parallels between the ongoing violence and the end of the apartheid era in South Africa.
In suggesting a way forward, Ramaphosa stated, “The escalating situation in Israel and Palestine affirms once more what we South Africans know too well, that intractable conflicts can only be solved through peaceful negotiation.”
