Ramaphosa and Malawian President host joint press conference

Published on

President Cyril Ramaphosa held a joint press conference with Malawian President, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, amid news of Pastor Shepherd Bushiri and his wife’s escape.

The presidency took to Twitter on Sunday, 15 November 2020, to share images of the joint press conference that was held by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Malawian President, Dr Lazarus Chakwera. The joint press conference took place during the Malawi Working Visit, which was held at Mahlamba Ndlopfu.

However, during the press conference, the pressing matter was that of Pastor Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, fleeing from South Africa to their home country, Malawi. According to media reports, the Malawian Presidency has claimed to have no knowledge of how Bushiri managed to flee the country, with no record of his travels being documented or found by the Department of Home Affairs.

Chakwera’s office has reportedly addressed the suggestion that his jet could have transported Bushiri, and has categorically stated that it would never implicate itself in such a manner. Moreover, the presidential aspect of the meeting is believed to have yielded positive results, with the countries committing to a better working relationship.
